Queer Campout was founded by a group of friends and friends-of-friends and friends-of-friends-of-friends in 2017.  The idea is just what it says: camping out, with a bunch of other queers! We thought it would be great to get together out of the bar scene, and get under the stars and go camping! Highlights include campfires at night, chillin’ by day, and a real good time!

This space is open to anyone who identifies as queer. So…who’s queer? Do you feel queer? We’re using “queer” here as an umbrella term encompassing non-heterosexual sexualities, as well as trans folks, nonbinary, and genderqueer folks. Frequently within public spaces, queers don’t feel safe. The goal of this camping trip is to create space in our community that centralizes the safety and comfort of queers. That means: fat queers, skinny queers, femme queers, butch queers, trans queers, queers of color, agender queers, genderfluid queers, queers without documentation, queers of different abilities, queers of all flavors. It’s okay if you don’t feel “queer enough.” If you identify as queer, you belong here. And, of course, if you’re inviting someone, you’re vouching that they’re a safe person for this environment.

This is a co-creative space where it’s cool to take care of each other, be kind, be friendly and have fun! It’s a space that is consensual, anti-racism, anti-transphobia, anti-fatphobia, anti-body-shaming, and actively body positive. We all have privileges, we all experience oppression, and we all have various intersections with those things, but in this space, if you’re swinging your privilege around in a way that is hurtful to someone, that behavior is not welcome. Let’s come together as the wildly & beautifully weird & wonderful community that we are, and co-create something supportive, empowering, consensual, and above all — fun!

A few other quick camp guidelines:

  • Queer Camp is kid-friendly, but please leave your dogs at home!
  • Take photos only with the consent of the people in the picture.
  • We ask $10 per person to cover the cost of reserving the campsite. No one turned away for lack of funds. Please contribute as you are able. The site fee can be paid in advance via paypal/venmo (email for the paypal/venmo address) or on-site in cash; either one is fine.
  • Please exercise personal responsibility & accountability with alcohol — know your limits, and take care of yourself.
  • And, if you pack it in, please pack it out. Taking care of our community means taking care of the earth and this campsite, too!
